  • Model parallelism splits the model itself across multiple GPUs — different layers or parameter blocks live on different devices. This is necessary when the model is too large to fit on a single GPU, such as when training a 70B+ parameter model.   • Pipeline parallelism is a hybrid: model layers are split into stages across GPUs, and micro-batches flow through the pipeline. This reduces idle time compared to naive model parallelism and is common in frameworks like Megatron-LM.
